New IDF guidelines raise importance of post-meal glucose control

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has published new guidelines on the contribution and impact of post-meal glucose in diabetes disease management at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) on September 19, 2007

43rd EASD Annual Meeting 2007

The Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2007 took place in Amsterdam from September, 17th until September, 21st. The programme included State of the Art Lectures, Symposia, Oral and Poster Presentations and many more.

New Guidelines on Diabetes, Prediabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases

Two new guidelines on the management of Diabetes, Prediabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases were published recently. The IDF guideline presents best practice care for individuals with prediabetes, as agreed by a panel of internationally respected diabetologists at the 2nd International Congress on Prediabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome. The new ESC-EASD Guidelines were presented at the implementation meeting in Nice end of June.

2nd International Congress on Prediabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome

The Congress was held in Barcelona from April 25th till April 28th and provided a platform for presentation of basic and clinical trials research results on novel therapies. On this Congress Bayer Schering Pharma contributed with a Satellite Symposium and Meet the Expert Sessions. Furthermore BSP was present with a booth.

Entering an exciting era of diabetes and cardiovascular prevention - a new outcome trial with Glucobay

A new outcome trial, sponsored by Bayer HealthCare, will commence in 2007 and investigate the effects of the oral antidiabetes drug, acarbose (Glucobay® , Bayer HealthCare AG), on preventing recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes in individuals with CVD and prediabetes.

Glucobay® – the most extensively investigated and widely prescribed α-glucosidase inhibitor – reduces post prandial plasma glucose excursions by delaying the absorption of carbohydrate from the small intestine. Glucobay® is an effective first-line therapy for patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, and induces a further improvement in glycemic control when used in combination with other antidiabetes agents.

It is therefore a convenient and effective long-term option for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, with a potential added benefit of reducing cardiovascular risk (Hanefeld et al. Eur Heart J 2004).

An effective glycemic control and compliance are critical in patients with type 2 diabetes to prevent disease progression and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular and other complications. In addition to information on Glucobay®, this website provides some material and services that may be helpful for you to improve patient education for a better compliance.
